Parents and students:
As part of the
English Curriculum, the students will work on a book report. The first step in
working on this book report is choosing the book. They will be able to pick the book of their
choice as long as it is first approved by me. Even though I want them to have
the liberty to choose their book, I want them to be able to choose wisely; one
that will challenge them but that they will be able to read in the amount of
time given.
READING THE BOOK:
This week they will
undergo the process of choosing the book. Starting next week, all of the
students should bring their books to class, because we will dedicate the last
half hour of the 2nd period to read the book. Nevertheless, your
child should also read at home. The book has to be a chapter book and the
students should start summarizing each chapter in at least 2-3 sentences on
loose-leaf paper. The summaries should be hand-written and they may write more
the one chapter summary per loose-leaf paper.
THE OUTLINE OF THE BOOK REPORT:
After
they have read the book, their next step will be to organize what they are
going to write about it in their report. Writing the basic elements down in an
outline format will help them organize their thoughts. What will you include in
the outline? The description should include the following elements:
1. The setting- where does the story take place? Is it a real place or
an imaginary one? If the author does not tell you exactly where the story is
set, what can you tell about it from the way it is described?
2. The time period- is the story set in the present day or in an
earlier time period? Perhaps it is even set in the future!
3. The main character(s)- who is the story mostly about? Give a brief
description. Often, one character can be singled out as the main character, but
some books will have more than one.
4. The plot- what happens to the main character? Pick only the most
important events.
a. Problem- what is the problem of the
story?
b. Turning Point/Climax- what events lead
to the conclusion?; describe a few of the more important things that happen to
the main character as he/she works toward that goal or solution
c. Conclusion- how is the problem solved?
